'Know your consumer rights' this Christmas

Consumers should make themselves aware of their consumer rights over the festive period, according to one financial expert.

Joanne Lezemore, senior solicitor, Which? legal services, said shoppers should be aware that, just because they do not want an item, it does not entitle them to a refund. Unwanted purchases can only be returned if the shop's refund policy allows it.

Additionally, if the customer does not have receipt, then the store does not have to give a refund. However, credit card and bank statements can be used as a proof of purchase.

Some stores will offer refunds without a receipt, but they will only give the current value of the product. If the item has been reduced since it was purchased, the refund will only be given at this value.

Consumer Direct found that electrical goods, like computers, televisions and mobile phones are among the most complained about items. Individuals buying these products were advised to find out what their rights are before they buy, as they may be entitled to refunds or repairs.
