Barclaycard: Christmas spending down this year

Overall spending by consumer was down this Christmas compared to last year, according to statistics from Barclaycard.

Spending fell 2.6 per cent this year, with each individual transaction worth seven per cent less than it was last Christmas.

Some sectors did see a spending increase, however, with service station spending up by 24 per cent on 2008 and supermarket bills coming to 15.2 per cent more than in the previous year.

More shoppers hit the high street on December 19th than any other day this year, with 370 per second at 12.48 pm at its busiest point.

Stuart Neal, head of UK payment acceptance at Barclaycard, said: "What we have seen over the busiest weekend of the year in the retail industry is a fall overall in terms of spending."

Barclaycard announced in September that it was launching a new service which would allow potential consumers to check their eligibility for the card, without it affecting their credit rating.
