An increase of up to 180 per cent is predicted, with most fires being caused by candles setting fire to objects around them, or from ovens.
Head of More Than home insurance Annette Lepper said: "We would encourage homeowners to take a few simple precautions to make sure that you don't let a fire ruin your celebration."
Checking that ovens are properly switched off once the food has been removed is one way of reducing the risk of fire.
Additionally, ensuring that candles are properly extinguished before leaving them unattended and keeping them away from soft furnishings.
Turning off Christmas lights both inside and outside properties can also prevent fires from occurring.
More Than recently advised consumers to be sure they protect their homes against water damage by properly insulating pipes to make sure they do not burst as the temperature drops.
