Long-haul holidays in 2010 'to beat passenger tax'

Many people are looking to take their holidays in far-flung locations next year in order to escape Air Passenger Tax increases, according to Abta - the travel association.

With the tax on every passenger due to increase by the end of 2010, many holidaymakers may be thinking of taking their holiday of a lifetime next year to make sure it is affordable.

The increased tax will see, for example, a family of four having to pay an extra £240 for a holiday to America. Trips to destinations like the Caribbean and Australia will also be hard hit.

Frances Tuke from Abta said: "This year has been remarkably resilient for the travel industry, and prospects are looking good for 2010, with the trend to more adventurous destinations continuing."

Abta estimates that three million holidaymakers will be heading off this Christmas of a holiday, with new year breaks to New York, Dublin and Amsterdam proving popular choices a weekend away.
