AA: Claims drop as snow thaws

The number of claims for car insurance the AA was receiving began to drop as the snow began to clear up, the provider has reported.

However, drivers are now being warned to look out for the remaining snow and black ice when out on the roads, as they are still causing accidents across the country.

This year, the AA recorded 644 applications for claims on December 21st. On December 23rd, 529 claims were made, with 48 per cent of these relating directly to incidents caused by black ice.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said: "Black ice is literally a hidden enemy: the road simply looks damp and for drivers, it's often too late when they realise that there is ice between their tyres and the road."

The insurance provider also warned motorists who were planning to go out in the bad weather that some drivers had reported finding their cars had been damaged or broken into after being left abandoned on snowy roads.
