Sainsbury's Bank pet insurance says pet insurance the best present

While the nation's pets can expect squeaky toys and meaty treats under the Christmas tree, Sainsbury's Bank is asking owners to consider giving them something more lasting - health insurance.

But the bank warns that while there are now over 100 different pet insurance products, different policies offer vastly different levels of cover.

"We all tend to treat our pets at this time of year, but instead of just splashing out on treats and toys, it's also worth investing in your pet's long term welfare," said David Pickett, pet insurance manager, Sainsbury's Bank.

He added: "In many cases, insurance can dramatically reduce the cost of owning a pet but more importantly, it can ensure it receives the required medical treatment it needs if it is injured or falls ill.

"Just ten per cent of cats and dogs are currently insured, and many of these will have policies that don't offer sufficient cover or that don't continue into a pet's old age - when pets are most likely to incur the highest vet bills. In fact, over 1,100 pet insurance claims could be turned down every month in the UK and in many cases this could be due to those policies which offer limited cover."

Sainsbury's Bank pet insurance has also offered tips to owners to keep pets safe and happy this Christmas.

These include keeping shiny or edible decorations out your pets' reach, being careful how much rich food goes to pets, keeping poisonous Christmas favourites like mistletoe out of the way and remembering to let pets get exercise and not be trapped inside as the family routine goes out the window over the holiday season.
