New fixed-rate bonds from Abbey

A range of new fixed rate bonds is being made available through Abbey and Alliance & Leicester.

Bonds with a rate of up to 4.10 per cent are being released through the financial institutions, which are part of the Santander group.

With the one-year bond, savers can get a 2.5 per cent gross rate per annum/AER with an investment of between £1 and £9,999. An investment of over £10,000 will bring returns of three per cent.

Consumers can apply for the loans through branches of the banks or through the Abbey website.

Reza Attar-Zadeh, director of savings and investments, said: "These bonds could be ideal for those savers looking for a guaranteed fixed income, knowing exactly what return they will receive."

Research carried out by Abbey last year found that the average saver is now putting aside £198 a month into their savings, a 21 per cent increase since the beginning of 2009.
