HSBC insurance urges homeowners to check for "Santa clause"

Britons risk having over £23 million worth of presents stolen from their homes this Christmas, which may not be covered by standard home contents insurance, HSBC has said.

The bank has urged consumers to check policies to see it they have a so-called "Santa clause" that will cover the extra value of goods in their houses over the Christmas period.

For example, More Than and Tesco Personal Finance have increased their basic home contents insurance cover by ten per cent over the festive season.

Insurers are also warning about the additional risks from thieves over the holiday season.

Up to 64,600 homes could be burgled this festive season, HSBC has said, adding that only half of Britons follow basic security advice like placing their Christmas tree away from a window.

Head of general insurance at the bank, Stephen Young, said: "Every year, over 60,000 people have their Christmas ruined by opportunistic thieves.

"Before starting your Christmas shopping, make sure your home is secure and check that your insurance policy has a 'Santa Clause' to cover all those extra gifts."
