Brits cancel gym membership to save money

British adults are cancelling their gym membership in a bid to save cash, moneysupermarket.com has stated.

According to the research, as many as ten per cent of people who have gym membership are planning to cancel it this year to save costs, as they rarely use it to keep fit.

Up to 46 per cent feel that hitting the gym is an unnecessary cost, as they can find other ways of keeping fit for less, which is in stark contrast to the one per cent of people who held this opinion 12 months ago.

Emma Walker, head of protection at moneysupermarket.com, said: "It's important to remember that while joining a gym can be a huge financial commitment, especially if you are on a tight budget, it's not the only way to kick-start a healthy new year."

For individuals looking to make the most of their cash in 2010, moneysupermarket.com offered advice earlier this month, with consumers advised to shop around for better deals on credit cards and utility bills.
