Tax payers reminded of self-assessment deadlines

Consumers who are planning to carry out their own tax assessments need to remember to give in their completed forms before the deadline or face large fines, unbiased.co.uk has reported.

It is estimated that £503 million will be charged to individuals who have returned their forms after the January 31st deadline, have made miscalculations or have acquired surcharges on unpaid tax.

Anyone who fails to return their form by the end of January will incur a £100 fine. If they still have not returned their documents by July 31st there will be a second £100 charge.

Karen Barrett, chief executive of unbiased.co.uk, said: "In the current climate where money is tighter than ever, we are urging consumers to take ‘tax action' and ensure they fill out their forms correctly and in time of the 31st January deadline."

Earlier this month the financial comparisons website had advised consumers that to stop themselves from becoming overdrawn in 2010, they could plan their budget this year using unbiased.co.uk's online financial calculator.
