With an estimated 4.1 million Britons heading off on extended breaks this year, it could leave them open to large bills as their properties may not be covered should the worst happen.
It is estimated that 36 per cent of home insurance policies only offer up to 30 days of unoccupancy cover, compared to the 60 days that is provided by a policy from Sainsbury's Finance.
Ben Tyte, manager of Sainsbury's Home Insurance, said: "We find it extremely alarming that more than one in ten people taking extended breaks will advertise their absence by updating their status on social networking websites."
In earlier research by Sainsbury's Finance, it was uncovered that consumers were neglecting their home insurance in order to save cash, with one in four not renewing or cancelling their policy in the last year.
