Burst pipes 'cost average of £3,000'

The average amount paid out by insurance companies following burst pipes is £3,000, according to Virgin Money.

Homeowners are being urged to protect their pipes as the cold snap is set to continue, leading to a possibility of further insurance claims.

Virgin Money Home Insurance stated that 'escape of water' claims, caused by burst pipes, accounted for 15 per cent of all claims between December 2008 and November 2009.

Grant Bather, spokesman at Virgin Money, said: "Homeowners should make sure that they have adequate insurance and are taking the necessary precautions to minimise the possibility of freezing or faulty pipes."

He also recommended turning on the central heating or hot water for a few hours a day as this will stop the pipes from freezing over.

Similarly, winter is also a risky time for drivers, as Virgin Car Insurance found before Christmas that December 19th is statistically the worst day in the month for car claims related to accidents or thefts.
