Pension claimants get free phone calls

A significant number of consumers drawing pensions and benefits via their mobile phones will be able to make their calls for free from the start of next week.

The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) has revealed that Vodafone, Orange, O2 and Tesco Mobile customers will be able to ring its 0800 Benefit Claim lines without charge starting on Monday January 18th, while T-Mobile and Virgin Mobile users will get the same deal seven days later.

Yvette Cooper, work and pensions secretary, said her department has been "working hard" to secure this agreement with the companies, which account for more than 90 per cent of the UK's mobile phone market.

"We don't want people who lose their jobs or the poorest pensioners to be penalised when they need to claim benefits just because they call from a mobile phone," she remarked.

In November, the DWP changed the name of Council Tax Benefit to Council Tax Rebate as part of further action to encourage pensioners to get the help they are entitled to.
