House prices increase 1.2 per cent

The average house price increased by 1.2 per cent in the first week of 2010, according to reports.

It has resulted in an overall increase in house prices of 0.4 per cent this month, the latest figures from Rightmove have shown.

This is the first positive increase in two months, following falls of 1.6 per cent in November and 2.2 per cent in December of last year.

After anticipating another fall in prices, the increases have proved to be a real turn-around in the market.

Miles Shipside, commercial director of Rightmove, said: "The limited supply of sellers is being outstripped by buyer demand but we predict there will be more forced selling later in the year."

In related news, it has been predicted by Savills that the housing market will remain volatile for some time yet, with a need for more lending a key feature of getting the market back to its pre-recession levels.
