Self-assessment tax return deadline approaching

The deadline for individuals who are carrying out their own tax assessments is looming, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has reminded consumers.

With the closing date for applications being January 31st, those who have chosen to carry out their own tax assessments have just over a week to complete them and ensure that they are received on time.

As the closing date for paper applications was October 31st, any submissions made now must be sent online.

Anyone who missed the October deadline for a paper return will incur a £100 fine, while any online applications that miss the January cut-off date will also face the same penalty.

Last year, 5.8 million people submitted their tax returns online, an increase of over 50 per cent on the 3.8 million who did the same the previous year.

HMRC's Sarah Walker said: "The January 31st filing deadline is just around the corner, so if you haven't yet sent in your 2008-09 tax return, you need to take action now."
