New high-speed broadband launched by BT

BT has launched a new high-speed broadband service called Infinity.

Capable of up to 40Mb speeds, the offering has been called a "really exciting development for consumers" by a Broadbandchoices.co.uk spokesman, who noted that people now have an alternative to Virgin Media's 50Mb XXL product.

"BT has priced its new 40Mb service competitively, clearly with a view to competing head-to-head with Virgin Media's XXL," commented Michael Phillips.

Infinity Option 1 is available for £19.99 a month, with buyers getting a free BT Home Hub, basic security and a 5GB Digital Vault as part of their 18-month contract.

Option 2 costs £24.99 a month, but there is no £50 connection charge, the monthly usage allowance is unlimited instead of being set at 20GB, the Digital Vault has an auto back-up function and it boasts 10Mb upload speeds instead of 2Mb. The other features are the same.

The unlimited usage allowance may be particularly appealing to potential customers.

Broadbandchoices.co.uk revealed recently that 32 per cent of broadband users were putting themselves at risk of excessive downloading penalties over Christmas because they planned to watch more TV online.
