Consumer energy debt levels rise

The average energy debt level was 20 per cent higher in the third quarter (Q3) of 2009 than it was in the corresponding period of 2008, new figures have shown.

Ofgem's quarterly social obligations report also revealed double-digit increases in the number of electricity and gas customers entering new debt repayment agreements between Q2 and Q3 of last year.

And the figures go up further still in the coming months, according to uSwitch.com energy expert Thomas Lyon.

"We are in the middle of a bitter winter which could add an extra £60 onto our next quarterly bills because of the extra heating and energy we've all had to use," he explained.

Mr Lyon noted that energy costs were much higher last year than in 2008, despite suppliers cutting their prices.

At the start of January, uSwitch.com warned consumers they could receive a "nasty shock" when their winter energy bills arrive, with the annual cost up 36 per cent over the last two years.
