Scottish drivers 'most likely to speed'

Drivers in Scotland are the most likely to have a speeding conviction on their driving license, according to moneysupermarket.com.

The price comparison site conducted a study of all the motorists who applied for insurance through the site and found that those living in East Dunbartonshire were most likely to have been caught driving too fast.

Additionally, 54 per cent of these convictions belonged to men aged between 17 and 21 years old.

Having a speeding conviction can increase the price of insurance, with moneysupermarket.com finding that it could double the cost of insurance to almost £1,000.

Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Speeding does increase accident rates so it's hardly surprising insurers view a conviction dimly."

Some of the motorists looking for new insurance could be doing so because they are planning to buy a 4x4 vehicle, as the price comparison site had announced that searches for cover on off-road cars had risen by 42 per cent during the bad weather in January, compared to the same time in December.
