Shoppers 'remain cautious' over spending

Consumers are still staying cautious over the amount they spend, despite reports that the economy is out of recession.

Research published by PayPal found that the recession has forced people to reassess their spending habits.

British adults have begun to spend more time thinking about the cost of what they are buying, with 64 per cent of women taking more notice of prices, compared with 53 per cent of men.

Overall, 54 per cent admitting to bargain hunting to see if they can find an item cheaper somewhere else.

Mark Hodson, marketing director of PayPal UK, said that the downturn the economic climate had on people's shopping habits had been surprising.

He added that although the economy was beginning to grow, "it's going to be some time before consumers start feeling better off and in the meantime we're likely to remain savvy shoppers".

Despite this new-found caution, shoppers still shelled out on gifts and decorations last Christmas, with 41 per cent of people in large cities choosing to do some of their shopping online.
