Tesco Bank: Men spend the most on Valentine's Day

Men are planning on shelling out five times more than women this Valentine's Day, according to research carried out by Tesco Bank.

Of those surveyed, over 50 per cent of women said they would set a budget of £10 for purchasing gifts for their loved one this Sunday.

By comparison, 69 per cent of men stated that they would be spending between £20 and £50 on treats and surprises for their partner.

Edinburgh was found to be the most romantic city, with seven per cent of men stating they would be spending over £200 on their special lady this weekend.

A Tesco Bank spokesperson said: "This year it seems that men are the new romantics and the recession has not put a damper on their Valentine's Day spending."

If some people are planning on reigning in their spending for Valentine's Day this year it could be because they overspent at Christmas time.

Tesco Bank estimated that on December 23rd 2010, its cash machines gave out 20 per cent more cash than at the same time last year.
