Barclays savers feel 'positive impact' of recession

Consumers with Barclays savings accounts have stated that the recession has not had a totally negative impact on their finances.

In research carried out by the institution, it was found that 37 per cent had not reduced the amount they were saving each month as a result of the economic downturn.

Furthermore, 17 per cent said they were saving more, due in part to getting a higher salary, spending more time at home or reductions in mortgage payments.

Young people have been most affected by the desire to build a nest egg, with 67 per cent of those aged 16 to 24 years not feeling any effect on their saving habits and a quarter of this total increasing the amount they put to one side.

Andy Gray, head of savings for Barclays, commented: "Perhaps the younger generation who have never really experienced a downturn like this before are being influenced by older members of their family."

Those who transfer their savings online with Barclays may have already spotted that the bank's website has recently been improved in order to make it easier for consumers to navigate.
