First Utility's tariff 'not as cheap as it appears'

First Utility's dual fuel tariff may not beat British Gas across the UK as they claim, according to one expert.

The cost of the first new standard dual fuel tariff revealed since British Gas announced a seven per cent price cut is dependent on a variety of factors and may not prove the cheapest available, according to Gocomapare.com.

Mark Greening, the head of utilities for comparison website, believes that, based on a standard customer's usage, monthly direct debit payment and online account management it is only the cheapest option in three UK distribution areas.

He also highlighted the lack of availability of the tariff, which is not offered online or through brokers and instead only through a direct telephone number.

"It remains to be seen whether this potentially headline grabbing tariff is a genuine long term deal or a just a tactical ploy to make the news," said Mr Greening.

Earlier this month, commenting on the British Gas price cut, Mr Greening had indicated his belief that other energy suppliers would follow suit.
