Think before using credit cards on holiday

As half term approaches, consumes planning on taking a break abroad have been warned against costly charges they might incur when using credit cards overseas.

According to moneysupermarket.com, the fees attached to card usage in foreign countries varies greatly across different companies and it urged holidaymakers to check the rates their provider offers in order to avoid a shock.

The website recommended that prepaid cards are a much cheaper option than using regular plastic and also provide the same level of convenience.

Peter Harrison, travel money expert at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Using an appropriate product can save holiday makers a packet and there are several different options available to savvy travellers."

He advised consumers to look at the FairFX and CaxtonFX prepaid offerings, which do not punish shoppers for purchases made abroad.

The website also recently called for a fairer deal for credit card users in the UK, calling on the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills to make sure suppliers have clear terms and conditions.
