Looking for love 'costs £912 million'

The price of looking for your true love sets back UK adults a combined £912 million a year, according to Santander Current Accounts.

Men spend almost twice as much as women in their hunt to find the one, with males shelling out an average of £780 each over the course of 2009, compared to the £380 paid out by women.

Young people are spending the most on their quest for love, with the 18 to 34 age group being responsible for £548 million of the total handed over last year.

Helen Bierton, head of Santander Current Accounts, said that although money may be in short supply, those looking for love are not.

"Money might not be able to buy you love, but it can certainly help the search," she added.

For anyone thinking of investing their money rather than spending it on finding Mr or Miss Right, Santander has released a Fixed Rate Bond with a return of up to 3.9 per cent.
