American Express Travel Insurance finds holiday makers uncovered

Thousands of people will be left exposed by their travel insurance while trying to find some winter bargains, American Express has revealed.

The insurer found that almost one person in two could lose out if items are lost, damaged or stolen overseas.

American Express found that while 48 per cent of people travel with expensive items like digital cameras or jewellery, most are unaware that the largest payout for a single item on a standard travel insurance policy is £250.

Even American Express' Premier Plus travel cover only protects items worth up to £750, and more than one person in four (27 per cent) travel with items worth more than this, the company said.

"Travellers should think about what they are packing and buying when abroad. No matter how great the exchange rate, nothing will be a bargain if it gets lost or stolen and you are not covered by insurance at all or because the items are over the policy's single item limit," commented Joanne Field, American Express Travel Insurance marketing manager.

"Travellers really do need to bear this in mind when looking for the right insurance policy," she added.

Jewellery was the expensive item people most frequently take abroad, with more than one person in five (21 per cent) admitting that they took a piece worth more than £1,000 on holiday with them.

American Express also warned consumers that, with one of the coldest winters for 30 years predicted, consumers should also check to make sure they are covered for flight delays and cancellations.
