Using mobiles behind the wheel 'needs bigger penalties'

Motorists who use their phone while driving should face tougher penalties, according to a survey.

Drivers who hold their car insurance with Direct Line have stated that people who are caught using their phone while driving should face harsher penalties.

Increasing fines or adding points to the licence of offending drivers are methods of punishment approved by 69 per cent of those questioned.

Earlier reseach by the insurer found that reaction times of motorists are 30 per cent slower when using a phone than when at the legal drink driving limit.

Andy Goldby, director of motor underwriting at Direct Line, commented: "The drivers that we spoke to when conducting the research would most definitely like to see these inconsiderate drivers penalised further for their selfish and dangerous driving habits."

Consumers looking for a new deal on their car insurance may like to consider taking out their policy with Direct Line, as the company is offering 52 days of free protection if the cover is bought before March 31st.
