Direct Line: Take care over frozen pipes

Consumers are being warned by Direct Line about the need to take to prevent against their pipes freezing this winter.

The insurance firm has seen claims against water damage caused by pipes bursting increasing by a third during the first part of this year.

It is also predicting that the price of paying out for these claims will also rise to meet the cost of replacing items and carrying out repairs.

Homeowners have been advised to keep an eye on the weather forecasts and take precautions to protect their pipes if freezing temperatures are predicted.

Kate Syred, head of business at Direct Line, advised: "If there is a leak, the first thing to do is shut off the water supply to the property via the main stopcock, then phone your insurer for further advice."

Earlier this month, Direct Line reminded consumers of the heartbreak that can be associated with water damage, as some precious items cannot be replaced and the time and hassle that needs to be spent on carrying out repairs.
