2m households 'do not pay energy bills'

Up to two million households are not paying at all for their fuel bills, it has been reported.

According to moneysupermarket.com, there are around one million homes in the UK that are not paying anything at all for their bills, with around half of this number being down to people not knowing who their supplier is.

There are a further one million people who said they had left a property without first settling their bills, leaving the new tenants to foot the cost when they move in.

Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com, warned that some people may have slipped through the net of their energy supplier, but they should inform them that they are not paying, otherwise the company may catch up with them and demand the last 12 months' payment in one sum.

Householders who do pay their bills may soon experience a drop in the cost, after British Gas announced it was to cut seven per cent from the price of its standard tariffs.
