The price comparison site stated that OFGEM's Quarterly Electricity and Gas Supply Market Report revealed that, on average, consumers are paying less on average than they were a year ago.
However, if the remaining five of the big six suppliers had followed the lead of British Gas and cut their costs by seven per cent, customers would have enjoyed further savings while the firms would still have had the same profits as in November 2009.
Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at confused.com, said customers cannot rely on their current provider to cut their standard price and, in order to protect themselves from paying too much, must take matters into their own hands.
He recommended paying by direct debit or taking out an online tariff as being good ways to save money.
The website has also recently urged homeowners to not depend on their traditional energy provider for the best deal, as cheaper offers often come from companies not associated with the region.
