Record numbers look for debt help

Record numbers of people are approaching charities looking for help with managing their debts, it has been reported.

The Citizen's Advice Bureau has seen an increase in consumers coming to them in search of help regarding debt, housing problems and benefits.

Statistics from the organisation have revealed that in England and Wales each day there are 9,500 new debt problem cases and 8,200 benefit cases being reported to them.

Citizens Advice chief executive David Harker said that although the worst of the recession is over, for many people the reality of struggling with their money will continue.

"Even more people are now worried about the further pressures on their household budgets from rising prices and exceptionally high winter fuel bills," he added.

Many of the people looking for help may be without cash as they are missing out on benefits they are entitled to, according to the charity, as £18 billion goes unclaimed in benefits each year.
