First:Utility energy plan 'the cheapest'

First:Utility offers the cheapest online energy plan of any company in the marketplace, according to one price comparison site.

New figures from uSwitch.com show that the energy provider's deal is £10 cheaper than British Gas - which offers the lowest price out of the Big Six suppliers - at £889 a year.

In addition, it also has the cheapest direct debit standard plan.

Commenting on her firm's findings, uSwitch.com energy expert Emma Bush remarked: "First:Utility is giving consumers a viable alternative to the big six energy suppliers. If it can continue to punch above its weight it stands a very good chance of shaking up the market."

According to Ms Bush, at an average of £912, online plans can be up to £300 cheaper than standard deals but only five per cent of households use one.

British Gas recently announced a 58 per cent rise in year-on-year profits in its residential sector but warned that wholesale prices may increase again this year.
