No insurance findings "very worrying"

Friends Provident's head of protection sales, Ed Stuart-Brown, said the Protection Oversight findings, which showed that nearly 24 million people did not have this cover, were "very worrying".

He added: "It's a sad fact of life that the unthinkable can and does happen and the last thing you would want is to leave yourself or your family in dire financial straits."

The report also suggested that people were unaware of how much money they would need per week in order to get by.

A third of consumers believed they could live on 35 per cent of their take-home pay, but Friends Provident said this would not be enough to survive on for the average.

The research was published as the Low Income Term Support Group suggested that people on long-term sick leave from work were about to become poorer.
