Non-smokers could 'save a packet' with insurance cover

Emma Walker, head of protection at moneysupermarket.com, commented that smokers should quit to make cash savings which they could use to buy cheaper critical illness protection.

To qualify for this she said a person must have given up a year before they can be considered a 'non-smoker' and so guarantee financial security in case they were unable to work because of an unforeseen serious condition.

"There are real savings to be made by kicking the habit and shopping around for the best insurance deal to suit your circumstances," Ms Walker added.

The comparison website calculated that the monetary benefits for a smoker included a £6,000 saving on life cover over a period of 25 years.

A saving of £1,500 a year in cigarettes could also be made by quitting smoking.

Friends Provident conducted a recent survey which found that nearly 24 million people had no insurance cover to protect their incomes if they were to become seriously ill.
