Foreign currency exchange 'more important than ever'

Bob Atkinson, travel expert at moneysupermarket.com, said that taking time to plan ahead and consider the rates given by currency providers, such as the Post Office, would ensure that travellers achieve better value for money.

He said: "When travelling abroad it really does pay to shop around for your travel money and be aware of the exchange rate and commissions when changing your money."

The Post Office rate would charge £934.32 for €1,000 in March, which was the most reasonable foreign currency rate, according to moneysupermarket.com.

UK currency has suffered one of its worst trials in recent months, falling two per cent against the euro and three per cent against the US dollar.

It is believed that the possibility of a hung parliament at the next general election has caused the pound to be valued at such a low level against a range of currencies.
