Energy Bill payers 'could save by comparing the market'

Gareth Kloet, head of energy at Confused.com, said the new E.ON six per cent gas price cut solves only half of the problem for customers, who have already been subjected to reductions from the two of the other six major suppliers.

Mr Kloet suggested that switching from a standard tariff would help potentially millions of consumers save a lot more than by continuing with their current supplier, which only gives them a "small reward for loyalty".

He said: "Using a consumer focus accredited comparison site, allows customers to search the whole market for the best tariff for their circumstances."

According to Mr Kloet the past year saw standard duel fuel tariffs fall on average by 4.9 per cent whereas the more competitive tariffs showed 21 per cent reductions to both gas and electricity.

E.ON is the third of the Big Six energy suppliers, following British Gas and Scottish & Southern Energy.

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, companies were recently criticised by pensioners who believed they had been made to carry the heaviest burden in energy costs.
