Consumers feel more confident, says GfK

Nick Moon, managing director of GfK NOP Social Research, said an upward trend which started in 2009 will continue this year and is likely to contribute to an economic recovery.

Mr Moon suggested that personal confidence during the economic downturn had become so exasperated there was only one trend for expectations to follow.

He said: "There is no doubt that consumer confidence has been increasing for the whole of 2009. It was increasing because it got into such a terrible position it couldn't do anything except increase."

GfK research found that a person's confidence in their own financial situation in the next 12 months has increased in the last year, while the 'major purchase index' remained at the same level.

However, a Nationwide survey found that consumer confidence declined during February by 39 per cent.
