SAGA pet insurance is a 'vital' budgeting tool

Andrew Goodsell chief executive of Saga Group, said vet bills were "vastly surpassing" inflation and an insurance plan was the safest way to protect against emergency fees in the future.

Mr Goodsell commented that pets are often esteemed as family members in this country.

He added: "Without the appropriate insurance, owners could be faced with the prospect of being unable to afford care because it's simply too expensive, a situation no one would voluntarily put themselves in."

Research undertaken by Saga revealed that the average annual vet bill of £598 is now double the price in 2006 and has increased at twice the rate of inflation since 2008.

A recent review of the Dangerous Dog Act aims to make it compulsory for dog owners to have their pets micro-chipped, thereby increasing the initial costs.

With regard to this review, Darren Black, head of pet insurance at Confused.com, said that insurance costs were often a "deal breaker" when deciding to buy a pet.
