Tax wastage amounts to £9 billion, says expert

Karen Barrett, chief executive of unbiased.co.uk, claims this is a "colossal amount" which has been lost due to error and avoidable circumstance.

He said: "This decrease in tax wastage could be down to the shrunken economy - with simply less disposable income for the tax man to get his hands on."

Mr Barrett recommended for people to use an independent financial adviser and effectively guarantee their tax efficiency.

An unbiased.co.uk Tax Action report found that tax-payers were largely apathetic towards increases but in order to prepare for them a third of Brits will need to stop their recreational habits, like going to the cinema or eating out.

It was reported that London and the south-east made the greatest contributions to the tax collector, giving over £2.6 billion.

The comparison website advises customers to make sure their financial adviser is independent up until 2012 and always ask to see their qualifications.
