Age counts at work, says expert

Phil Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK, said that the knowledge people acquire during the course of their working lives is often what distinguishes them from those with less experience.

He said: "It is a misnomer for some employers to think that because you haven't grown up with a technology then you can't be trained to use it."

Talking about new government plans, which it is hoped will help people over 50 find work, he welcomed them and added that the retirement age is going to increase for men and women.

However, the National Association of Pension Funds found that over a fifth of people were not at all confident that their pension would last to provide enough financial security during retirement.

Both Age Concern and Help the Aged want the government to scrap retirement legislation.

They found that mandatory retirement age usage increased during the recession as 100‚000 people were forced to retire on or after the age of 65.
