Aviva travel insurance tips for 'thrifty travellers'

Jerry Finch, travel product manger at the company, said that the usual need for a holiday after the winter period will be constrained by the wish to save during an uncertain phase in the economy, making some holidaymakers hesitant to take out travel insurance.

He added: "Shop around and compare the amount of insurance cover, not just the price. Whatever you do - do not travel without insurance."

According to Aviva, 64 per cent of people hoped to take a holiday overseas this year and almost a third admitted they would not be covered in case of emergency.

The insurance group recommends organising the cover immediately after booking the trip, meaning that any late cancellation of either plane or holiday altogether is protected.

Furthermore, it is advised that bargain policies may not provide adequate insurance in case of emergency, so Aviva suggests doing plenty of market research.

The recent BA strike, for instance, may not be covered by cheap travel insurance cover.
