Car insurance policy holders "fronting" to save cash

Steve Sweeney, head of car insurance at moneysupermarket.com, declared that this is a common procedure for many car owners who either think they can get away with it or do not realise it is illegal.

He said: "It may save you money in the short term on your premiums, but if caught your insurance will be invalidated and a younger driver could face court - charged with driving without insurance."

It was found by the comparison website that one in ten drivers have "fronted" to save money on their insurance policy and those most likely to commit this type of fraud live in London.

Mr Sweeney reminded younger drivers that using their own cover would provide the opportunity to build a no claims discount, which would reduce the future cost of insurance.

According to the fraud prevention service CIFAS, UK fraud increased by ten per cent between 2008 to 2009.
