Aviva advises protection against "opportunistic thieves"

Jonathan Cracknell, household underwriter at the insurance firm, explained that an increase in the number of thefts from garden sheds and garages coincided with the advent of British Summer Time (last Sunday of March this year), according to figures released by the company.

He said: "If you tot up all those things you keep outside […] like golf clubs and lawnmowers and kid's trampolines, I think most people would be quite surprised by how much all those belongings are worth."

Aviva advises homeowners to lock sheds, close gates and cover any large items that may be on display in the garden to would-be thieves.

The firm's household policies provide contents cover for items worth up to £2,500 left in the outbuildings of a property.

In contrast, last season insurance claims rocketed because of the adverse winter weather, which caused £650 million worth of 335,000 claims, according to the ABI.
