M&S Pet Insurance warns of 'doggy dangers'

David Wells, head of insurance, added that it was not just the chocolate that could cause illness, but swallowing toys could result in intestinal damage.

He said: "Ideally keep these objects well out of reach of your pets and supervise your dogs closely if children are playing with the toys."

The retailer's insurance branch offers a pet insurance premium of £7,000 per year and allows customers the service of an advice line open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Saga recently announced that pet fees have doubled in the last three years, surpassing inflation and exceeding the limits of personal income.

Research undertaken by the insurance provider found the average annual bill of £598 had increased by twice the rate of inflation from 2008 and the region with the most expensive fees was the north-west which charged a standard cost of £677.90 for a dog.
