Energy customers are too loyal, says expert

Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com, said that households should regularly switch providers and stated that doing so could save individual customers about £346 on their annual bills.

He added: "Unfortunately, languishing on your incumbent providers' standard deals will not be rewarded … but will ensure Brits continue to pay through the nose for their gas and electricity."

Mr Byrom calculated that an average saving of 29 per cent could be made to a standard household tariff if customers switched their provider.

It is feared that the government will not bring an end to fuel poverty by 2016 in line with its target to reduce the amount of people who spend more than ten per cent of their income on utility bills, according a report by the Energy and Climate Change Committee.
