Natwest research reveals thrifty teen trend

The survey was conducted by the Money Sense panel, an annual poll which interviewed teenagers aged 12 to 19 across the country.

Sarah Neary, head of the bank's panel, said the results demonstrated the younger generation's ability to understand the value of money and make good choices as to how they spend it.

She added: "Money management lessons help students become financially fit, instilling good budgeting practices and helping to prepare the next generation for a brighter financial future."

Boys were found to be the most astute savers, with 33 per cent revealing plans to save money, compared with 24 per cent of girls.

However, it was revealed that 38 per cent of young people expected to be in debt worth £10,000 after their higher education, when in fact the estimated figure is £20,000.

The comparison website uSwitch recently reported that six in ten adults feel that the pleasure has been sapped from shopping on the high street since the recession.
