Credit card customers 'cannot afford repayments'

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said financial worries have stopped people from purchasing in excess on the high street, yet debt is still a prevalent issue.

She added: "I would urge anyone in this spiral to take time out to talk to a trusted friend or advisor to try to break the cycle. Getting into unmanageable debt is not the answer."

A survey undertaken by the comparison website showed that a third of consumers have kept some purchases secret from their partner and guilty shoppers have returned £32.2 million worth of items.

Barclays recently reported that the credit card industry had seen an increase in spending by 7.1 per cent in February compared with last year, but a fall of 2.5 per cent was recorded since January.
