Saga pet insurance issues warning over chocolate treats

Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of the company, said the upcoming Easter bank holiday is a time when people enjoy treating those close to them, especially pets.

He added: "However, it is very important to feed pets with animal-friendly chocolate to avoid causing harmful effects to their health … a worry no pet owner would like to have."

The insurer found that 35.9 per cent of people aged over 50 own a cat or dog and whereas a fifth of pet owners admitted feeding their animal chocolate five years earlier, just 2.5 per cent still persist.

Saga offers a pet insurance plan worth £2,000 to cover any accident or injury claim and recently revealed that the average vet bill has doubled since 2006, increasing at twice the rate of inflation in the last two years.
