Credit card 'details must be kept safe'

Richard Hurley, CIFAS communications manager, stated customers "owed it to themselves" to become more aware of the dangers of fraud and take care when disposing of their personal information.

He said: "The rise in this more sophisticated kind of fraud can often be perpetrated by organised criminal networks exploiting our use of computers and the internet."

CIFAS found a 32 per cent rise in collective fraud last year and also noted that current address fraud represented 55 per cent of all identity fraud cases.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills recently declared it would implement changes to the existing rights of credit card customers.

It was announced that consumers would be able to have greater control over their debt repayments by paying off the highest debt first and also be presented with a list of other rates when they read their statements, giving them a more informed choice of market offers.
