Legal & General aiming to "reinvigorate" mortgage market

Financial services provider Legal & General is aiming to boost the mortgage industry by agreeing a deal to distribute ING Direct fixed, standard variable rate and tracker mortgages.

Director of mortgages at the former organisation Ben Thompson stressed that the agreement is only a "pilot" at the moment, but he is very happy to be able to add another lender to the company's range.

He stated: "It's part of our ongoing project to reinvigorate the UK lending market with lenders providing fresh impetus to the industry."

The products will initially only be available to appointed representatives of the network, since Mr Thompson believes it is best to expand the volume of transactions in a "controlled, sensible way".

Mortgage director at ING Direct Julian Hartley responded by noting that the deal gives the firm a chance to test alternative distribution channels.

Another recent addition to the Legal & General mortgage selection has been two new fixed-rate product offered by Newcastle Building Society.
