Confused.com explains 'rare situation' for insurance providers

The travel insurance industry is unlikely to take a unified approach to the chaos caused by this week's volcanic cloud, it has been suggested.

Confused.com's head of travel cover Steve Williams said the situation, which has forced airports across the UK to close on safety grounds, "is incredibly rare" and providers will likely respond differently to the delays and cancellations it has caused.

"It is unfortunate that there is not one standard approach when an 'act of God' happens - this will be referred to as catastrophe cover in policies," the expert remarked.

The dust cloud, which is thought to contain rock, glass and sand particles dangerous to aircraft engines, has blown over to the UK from Iceland and is also affecting other European countries, such as Belgium.

Flights were grounded on Thursday (April 15th) and restrictions are not expected to be lifted until at least Saturday morning, affecting thousands of travellers.
